Japanese Makko powder for handmade incense
Build your own incense blend with finely ground Tabunoki bark (Machilus thunbergii), imported from Hino, Japan. Makko works as both a base and a binder: add water to help your dry ingredients come together, then shape the mixture into cones or sticks.
This is an incense-making ingredient, not ready-made incense. Add your chosen aromatic woods or herbs to create your blend. Choose a 100 g or 142 g resealable pouch to suit your projects.
Your first small batch: mix, shape, dry
1. Mix dry ingredients. As a beginner starting point, use 50-60% Makko by dry weight with your finely powdered aromatic ingredients. The right balance varies with the recipe.
2. Add water gradually. Mix and knead until the dough holds together and can be shaped.
3. Shape small cones or sticks. Let them air-dry fully before testing. Drying time varies with thickness, humidity and airflow.
4. Test a small piece before making a larger batch. Adjust your recipe if it crumbles or does not stay lit.
Burn finished incense in a suitable holder on a heat-resistant surface, with ventilation. Never leave burning incense unattended.
